BRAZILIAN CONTINGENT PRESENT AT THE QUEER LIBERATION MARCH on 06/27

Groups of the Brazilian LGBTQI+ community activists and allies will bring their messages to the “Queer Liberation March” in its 3rd edition. The march will run from Bryant Park on 42nd street to Washington Sq Park on Sunday, June 27 starting at 2 PM

Brazilians are expecting a great number of its community activists to join them. The women of Batalá, a drummers percussion group with their base group originating in Bahia, will join the Brazilian section of the march, filled with many messages of pride and revolt.

According to the organizers leading the Brazilian Pride Rebellion Coalition, they will "march in support of the LGBTQI+ community of New York that we integrate, and also denounce the extreme violence, homophobia, transphobia that is going on in Brazil, worsened since Bolsonaro became president. We will demand justice for the LGBTQIA+ political and social movement leaders that were recently assassinated in Brazil, including in alignment with #BlackLivesMatter, #translivesmatter movements demands, and jointly, to #stopBolsonaro and #removeBolsonaro from the Presidency. We echo the Brazilian social movements in New York".

The Queer Liberation March was formed in 2019 by community organizers, activists, and queers of conscience that banded together after years of seeing the annual NYC Pride March transformed by corporations and sponsors. For the organizers, the "Pride Parade" is "overflowing with corporate floats and at the service of corporate money, the Pride Parade had become a new symbol of gay for pay. The imposition of barricades along the parade route separated the participants from its audience, turning the Pride March into an entertainment venue instead of a true expression of our cultural legacy.

"The presence of a dozen police officers at every intersection of the Parade marked the collusion of the non-profit board and the very instance of state-sponsored oppression.

The Reclaim Pride Coalition claims in their calls for the march: “No corps, no cops, no bs!”

Brazilian-Americans will join the efforts to reclaim Pride, march strong and against LGBTQ+ oppression in NY, in Brazil and in the world.
