TIAA and Harvard’s Brazilian farm deals judged illegal as fires rage on their properties in the biodiverse Cerrado

The Rede Social de Justiça e de Direitos Humanos has launched a campaign to bring awareness for people to take action against companies that support or contribute to illegal land grabbing in Brazil.

Land grabbing is a major source of destruction of the environment and of livelihoods of small settlers and small farmers in Brazil, and it also has a huge impact on indigenous communities and traditional communities of Afro-Brazilian descent (known as “quilombolas”)

A huge victory for this campaign was achieved this week, as TIAA and Harvard’s Brazilian farm deals were judged illegal as fires rage on their properties in the biodiverse Cerrado (tropical flatlands)

The campaign is bringing awareness to universities across the U.S., where faculty and graduate students contribute to their pensions held in large majority by TIAA-CREF.

Did you know that they invest in land that promotes illegal exploitation of the local communities in Brazil?

You can help in mounting pressure towards responsible investing, and demand divesting of these illegal ventures, or those that cause violations of Environmental Rights and Human rights.
