November 20th in Brazil this year celebrates 50 years of the march in honor of Zumbi dos Palmares and his partner Dandara, leaders of Quilombo dos Palmares.  Quilombos were communities organized by fugitive enslaved Africans and Afro-Brazilians. Quilombos dos Palmares was located in the Northeast of Brazil where many fought for their freedom for over 100 years, in the 17th century. The legendary warrior Zumbi was murdered after suffering several attacks .

Today, many territories are recognized as historical Quilombos in Brazil.

Brazil has one of the largest populations of the African diaspora.  Yet, very little is taught in schools about Africa or slavery. It took many decades of demonstrations and marches until November 20 was instituted as a national holiday in 2011.

In Brazil, the black community and social movements will be on the streets to demand the impeachment of Bolsonaro for his numerous crimes. The New York event intends to echo their efforts.

After the celebration, participants will be invited to join the organizers in a march and protest against President Bolsonaro, in Times Square.
