BRAZILIANS AND ALLIES MARCH WITH INDIGENOUS LEADERS AND YOUTH TO DEMAND PROTECTIONS TO THE AMAZON AND CENSURING OF BOLSONARO AT THE UN.

After alerting leaders of the UN about the dangerous policies and toxic declarations of Jair Bolsonaro in an open letter the the ASecretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres , a coalition of 14 organizations named #cancelBolsonaroUN coordinated by the Defend Democracy in Brazil Committee NY (DDB) will join the Indigenous Leaders for the Brazilian contingent at the Climate Strike at the Youth March.

Musicians, including Reverend Billy and the stop shopping choir, youth and activists will bring banners and make noise denouncing the devastation and violence spread in the Amazonian region since the start of the Bolsonaro government in January of this year.

After an attempt to transfer the Indigenous Foundation ( FUNAI) and turn it into a department of the Agriculture Ministry, under the control of Agribusiness politicians, Bolsonaro incited what was called “The day of Fire”, that now is destryoing large swaths of the most important Rainforest in the world. Notwithstand, it is continuing cutting funds and firing personal, aiming to cause a deterioration of its previous policies of monitoring and reinforcement of environmental laws in the area.

With his virulent rhetoric and threats to default  the commitments signed by Brazil at the Paris Agreement, he is sending a permissive message for invaders and criminals to put the Amazon on fire and to kill its population and Indigenous leaders. Using a distorted nationalist rhetoric he defends a necessary “development plan for the future of the region”, which implies the exploration of the forest resources for the food industry, the contamination of rivers and people by mercury for the mining industry, and the hold of lands by the use of cattle pasture.

Banners will carry clear messages, such as “We are the Guardians of the Forest”;  “The Amazon is on Fire: stop killing us”, and “Your hamburger is killing the Amazon”, indigenous leaders and supportive activists will exemplify that the Climate Action that needs to happen immediately isn’t only about plastic and carbon emissions. But it is also about stopping the genocide of those indigenous and traditinal communities who protect the forests from complete destruction, with their own bodies.
